Karuta Workshop

かるた（百人一首）ワークショップ (日本語は後半) 

We’re excited to announce an "Introduction to Karuta Workshop", where members will have the chance to learn about competitive karuta, a fast-paced traditional Japanese card game that combines poetry, reflexes, memorization, and strategy.

Date/Time: Sunday, March 8, 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Location: EJCA Lounge 2

Fee： Free, your registration is required

Registration closing date: March 5, 2026

Program：

1. Introduction of Kyogi Karuta
2. Basic rules and gameplay
3. Description of how competitive matches work 
4. Playing karuta in a relaxed, beginner-friendly setting. No prior experience is needed!
5. Next step - Karuta Club

While full games of Karuta use 50 cards, during the workshop we will be playing a small beginner version with only 10 cards.

Kyougi Karuta has been played in Japan for over 100 years, and it is a rapidly growing sport both in Japan and globally. Today, there are over one million players. Much of the growth of Karuta can be attributed to the manga/anime/drama series, "Chihayafuru". Karuta is a great activity for people of all ages. Playing Karuta is a good way to develop focus, memorization ability, and hand‐eye coordination, as well as meet new people and experience the thrill of competition.

At the workshop, you will learn about Karuta and how to play from Canada's #1 player, a new EJCA member, who has won multiple tournaments in Japan, achieved a 3rd Dan certification, and got 1st place at the 1st US Karuta Open.

「かるた(百人一首）入門ワークショップ」のお知らせです。ワークショップでは、短歌・反射神経・記憶力・戦略などを組み合わせた日本の伝統的な競技かるたをご紹介します。

日本で育った方は学校で習った短歌をご存じですし、ご家庭やお友達とかるた（百人一首）をしたこともおありでしょう。それを思い出して、ご一緒にかるたを楽しみませんか？

日時：3月8日（日）午後3時～5時

場所：EJCAラウンジ2

参加費：無料ですが、登録をお願いいたします。

登録締め切り：3月5日

プログラム：

1. 競技かるたの紹介
2. 基本ルールと遊び方
3. 競技かるたのデモンストレーション
4. 初心者にも気軽に楽しめるかるた体験。経験は不要です！
5. 次のステップは、EJCAかるたクラブを作りたいと思っています。

競技では50枚のかるたを使いますが、ワークショップでは、初心者向きに10枚のカードを使います。

競技かるたは日本で100年以上の歴史があり、日本国内外で急速に成長しているゲームです。現在100万人以上の人が競技かるたをしますが、漫画・アニメ・ドラマシリーズ『ちはやふる』の影響で近年大勢の人がかるたを楽しむようになりました。競技かるたをすることは、集中力、記憶力、手と目の協調性を養うというだけでなく、新しい人々との出会いを楽しみ、競技のスリルを体験することもできます。

今回は、カナダNo.1プレイヤーであり、EJCA会員のAlexさんにご指導をいただきます。日本でいくつもの大会で優勝し、かるた三段の資格を取得し、2025年には第1回米国かるたオープンで優勝しました。

3月8日にお目にかかるのを楽しみにしています。
