Hina Matsuri Open House
(Hina Doll Display)

Date: Sunday March 4, 2007

Place: EJCA Cultural Centre
6750-88 Street, Edmonton

Time: 1:00 to 3:00 pm (Lounge 1)

Hina Matsuri is officially on March 3rd, and is one of the traditional Japanese festivals in which to wish girls to grow up healthy and strong. Sometimes it is called Momo no Sekku (Plum Blossom Festival) because plum trees are in bloom at this time of year in Japan. This tradition began in the 11th century and continues to this day.

The Hina doll display shows the imperial court of the 11th century Heian period, with the emperor and empress on the top level, with court staff, musicians, and household items on the lower levels. In the beginning only the royal couple appeared in the display, but during the Edo period the displays became more elaborate evolving to what is seen today.
