Image of Chigiri-é Art The Chigiri-é Art club

This group gather to work on their art each month and share ideas and techniques. Occasionally their work is on display at the Centre or for sale at special events.

The Centre is also host to a special collection of Chigiri-é artwork on loan from the Provincial Government's art collection.

In the Japanese language, Chigiri-é literally means to tear paper to create a collage. This technique consists of tearing and pasting down dyed handmade paper to create a composition which lends a two-dimensional appeal, thereby bringing life to the art.

Hundreds of hand-torn small pieces of paper blend together to create this collage art which is mounted on shikishi, a traditional Japanese medium. The secret is in the paper used to develop the design. The finished Chigiri-é is a collage comparable to a painting, although no paint is used in the application process.
